Linda Vega: Texans Deserve a Real Limited Government Senator

By Linda Vega

Texans take pride in self-reliance, community, and families. This is why Texas rejects a big and intrusive government coming from Washington.  Texans reject legislation like Obamacare, No Child Left Behind, and an agency like the IRS that has become so intrusive and has usurped its power to pick on conservatives. Even some provisions in the Patriot Act that allow the federal government to spy on American citizens without a warrant, and this goes too far for many Texans. For the last twelve years, the federal government, has grown more any other time in history, and Sen. John Cornyn has presided over all this legislation.

A further oppressive big government is one that spies on its own citizens, and a disappointment is when our representatives vote in favor of it.   In 2007, Senator Cornyn voted for the FISA Amendments Act, which granted immunity to U.S. telecommunication companies for giving information about their customers to the government without a warrant.

On December 28, 2012, Sen. Cornyn voted to re-authorized FAA Sunsets Extension Act of 2012, which will authorize warrantless surveillance of Americans until 2017. This is one of the key provisions that allowed the NSA to conduct its warrantless blanket surveillance of American citizens.  And we must also remember that U.S. Senator Cornyn Voted to Reauthorize the Patriot Act.

So Texans deserve to know, is Sen. Cornyn for protecting our Freedom or Voting to Restrict it?

When Sen. Cornyn was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002, our National Debt was only $6 trillion. Today, our national debt is almost $17 trillion. To be clear, our debt has increased almost 200 percent  since Sen. Cornyn was elected in 2002. This the biggest increase in American history, especially within a span of a 12 year period. Sen. Cornyn has  Voted to Raise the Debt Ceiling Eight Times, and we have watched the debt increase year after year.

More importantly, this financial disaster is a direct result of votes that Sen. Cornyn has cast in the past 11 years. In 2013, Sen. Cornyn voted to end debate and allow Senate Democrats to re-insert funding for ObamaCare.  In 2012, Sen. Cornyn Voted for the Fiscal Cliff Tax Hike that increased Taxes, or the so-called Bush Taxes. And in 2008, Sen.Cornyn voted for the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street, or T A R T. Taxpayers should have never been forced to pay for the mistakes of the big banks.

Sen. Cornyn, in 2003, also Voted for Medicare Part D, a massive entitlement expansion.  Also, Senator Cornyn voted for the Protect Intellectual Privacy Act (PIPA or SOPA in the House) in committee.  His vote helped move PIPA to the Senate floor, where it met a well-deserved defeat. Under PIPA, the government would have the power to shut down millions of websites

For 11 years, Sen. Cornyn has been telling Texans that he is for limited government, when in fact  he has voted for all the bills that created a larger and more expensive federal government. This has helped to create an uncontrollable administration under Obama.

For the past 11 years, Sen. Cornyn has told Texans and Americans that he is for protecting their freedoms and privacy, yet evidence shows he has voted for every single bill that infringes on privacy, like PIPA, and FISA Amendments Act in 2007 and 2012 gratings power to NSA  to spy on Americans.

Texans deserve a conservative Senator who will protect our freedoms, not one who votes it away.

Texans deserve a limited federal government that will not continue to spend without limits.

Texans deserve a conservative Senator in 2014!
