{"id":13473,"date":"2023-08-08T18:19:48","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T18:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/?p=13473"},"modified":"2023-08-10T18:59:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T18:59:20","slug":"what-issues-will-win-the-latino-vote-on-election-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/?p=13473","title":{"rendered":"What issues will win the Latino vote on election day?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>2 million Latinos are eligible to vote in the upcoming election.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>by William Gallego, Jim Scho<\/em>lz,&nbsp;<em>and Allie Yang <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/video\/embed?id=73868180\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Renato Ramirez is living the American dream along the United States-Mexico border, running the ranch his parents bought the year he was born eight decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m an American of Mexican descent,\u201d Ramirez told ABC News. \u201cI\u2019m proud of my race, proud of heritage, my ethnicity. I\u2019m proud of what my family has done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His family made a successful living off the 4,000-acre ranch in Texas, and with that success, they provided for their children, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramirez is now a millionaire, a vaquero and businessman. He\u2019s one of <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32 million Latinos eligible to vote<\/a> &#8212; the country\u2019s largest non-white electorate &#8212; in the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">election<\/a>, according to a 2019 paper from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/essay\/an-early-look-at-the-2020-electorate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his vote, he says \u201cthe bottom line is the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"992\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/renato-ramirez1-abc-ay-201023_1603466883403_hpEmbed_16x9_992.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/renato-ramirez1-abc-ay-201023_1603466883403_hpEmbed_16x9_992.jpg 992w, https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/renato-ramirez1-abc-ay-201023_1603466883403_hpEmbed_16x9_992-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/renato-ramirez1-abc-ay-201023_1603466883403_hpEmbed_16x9_992-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/latinosreadytovote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/renato-ramirez1-abc-ay-201023_1603466883403_hpEmbed_16x9_992-678x381.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 992px) 100vw, 992px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that most of us have the same common goal, that we all want to educate our children,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all want them to have a good economic life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s not alone. Eighty percent of Hispanic workers say the economy is their top priority in the 2020 election, followed closely by <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/obamacare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health care<\/a>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/09\/11\/hispanic-voters-say-economy-health-care-and-covid-19-are-top-issues-in-2020-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe issues that matter to the Hispanic community are the issues that matter to all Americans, right?\u201d Julian Castro, former secretary of housing and urban development, told ABC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Castro, a Democrat, was the only Latino to run for president in 2020. His campaign ran on progressive policies, like \u201cMedicare for All\u201d and raising the federal minimum wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His presidential bid failed but those progressive policies proved popular with many Latino voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive Latino voters helped Bernie Sanders win Nevada, Colorado and California and kept Sanders in the Democratic primary in Texas. Sanders came within just five points of beating Democratic nominee Joe Biden in Texas, winning 40% of the Latino vote, according to an exit poll by <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/elections\/election-results\/texas-democratic-primary-live-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Washington Post.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the 2024 presidential election, the number of Latinos in Texas is expected to surpass the white population. They could make the difference between the state turning blue or staying red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are a swing state,\u201d Castro said. \u201cYou know, the last 10 to 12 polls showed the presidential race here basically tied. If we can win here, then it&#8217;s game over for the Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationwide, Biden is outpacing President Trump by more than 30 points among registered Latino voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Hispanic vote is going to be crucial,\u201d Castro said. \u201cIt is a young population. It&#8217;s a growing population. But it&#8217;s one that is getting out, I think, in 2020 more than it did in 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, less than half of registered Latino voters showed up to the polls. This year, there\u2019s a focused effort to mobilize this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrities like America Ferrera, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have pushed people to vote on social media, endorsed candidates, appeared at conventions and hit the campaign trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turnout among Latino voters is expected to increase by 15% in the upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe key to getting Latinos to the ballot box is a full-court press on voter registration,\u201d Castro said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groups like Latino Justice are also working hard to reach Spanish-speaking voters. However, many voters are now faced with a new, formidable voting challenge: the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn our countries, voting by mail is not necessarily something that happens [in other elections],\u201d Ricardo Negron, legal service coordinator for the organization, told ABC News. \u201cWhile it may be a new system for some people, we want to make sure that people know down here in Florida, it has been happening for years. It&#8217;s not something that has been implemented because of COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s because of COVID-19 that long lines have formed for early voting, leading to a record-breaking voter turnout before election day, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/2020-early-voting-data-continues-hit-record-numbers\/story?id=73701061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States Elections Project.<\/a> Ramirez was one of these people voted early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is among the nearly 30% of Latino voters who support President <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>. Today, his family\u2019s wealth extends into the millions. For that reason, Ramirez says a vote for Trump isn\u2019t personal, it\u2019s simply smart business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For him, it matters less that Trump has said in the past that Mexican immigrants bring crime to the U.S. Ramirez says, \u201cthe thing is, he&#8217;s not a politician.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose are kind of stupid remarks that he has made. It&#8217;s a very small portion of Mexico,\u201d Ramirez said. \u201cMost people want to work. Most Mexicans want to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about the many Latinos who seek the success Ramirez has found but don\u2019t have the leg up he received?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know what to tell them. I just don&#8217;t know,\u201d he said. \u201cDevelop commitment and develop a discipline. Work hard. That&#8217;s basically how I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sema Hernandez, another Texas native, says voting for Trump was never an option as a Latina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is actually detrimental to the Latino community,\u201d she said. \u201cThey [sh]ould vote for their interests as a Latino, as a culture, as a people, instead of voting for their financial interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hernandez is a political activist and mother of four who ran for U.S. Senate in 2018 but lost in the Democratic primary against Beto O\u2019Rourke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore I started running for office, I was coaching little league baseball and breastfeeding my baby in the dugout,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent just $4,000 on her campaign, but garnered nearly 25% of the vote, according to election results from <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/results\/texas-senate-primary-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Associated Press.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI outperformed in places where most Democrats don&#8217;t perform very well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She credits her success to appealing to Latinos as Americans. That was a winning strategy for President George W.
