They will account for 13.3% of all eligible voters.\n However, the number of Latino eligible voters is still far below the 60\n million Latinos who live in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latino eligible voters \u2013 U.S. citizens ages 18 and older \u2013 could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/01\/17\/latino-democratic-voters-place-high-importance-on-2020-presidential-election\/#dem-primaries\">play a larger role<\/a>\n in this year\u2019s Democratic Party primary season. A majority (56%) live \nin states that will hold Democratic primaries and caucuses on or before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/us\/elections\/2020-presidential-election-calendar.html\">Super Tuesday<\/a> (March 3), up from 29% in 2016. Nationally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/01\/17\/latino-democratic-voters-place-high-importance-on-2020-presidential-election\/\">62% of Latino registered voters<\/a> identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party while 34% say the same about the Republican Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How we did this<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five facts about the geography of Latino voters for the upcoming 2020 presidential election:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/01\/31\/where-latinos-have-the-most-eligible-voters-in-the-2020-election\/ft_2020-01-31_latinovoters_02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ft_2020.01.31_latinovoters_02.png\" alt=\"Top states for Latino eligible voters\" class=\"wp-image-357404\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>1<strong> Two-in-three Latino eligible voters live in just five states.<\/strong>\n California alone holds roughly a quarter of the nation\u2019s Latino \nelectorate, with 7.9 million Latino eligible voters. Texas is second \nwith 5.6 million, followed by Florida (3.1 million), New York (2.0 \nmillion) and Arizona (1.2 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 <strong>Latinos make up the highest share of eligible voters in New Mexico (43%). <\/strong>The other top states are California (30%), Texas (30%), Arizona (24%) and Florida (20%).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/01\/31\/where-latinos-have-the-most-eligible-voters-in-the-2020-election\/ft_2020-01-31_latinovoters_03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ft_2020.01.31_latinovoters_03.png\" alt=\"Texas congressional districts have some of the nation\u2019s largest Hispanic populations\" class=\"wp-image-357403\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>3 <strong>Texas\u2019 20th \nCongressional District is home to 359,000 Latino eligible voters, the \nhighest number of any congressional district in the country. <\/strong>Texas\u2019\n 16th, 34th and 23rd districts, and Florida\u2019s 26th District, round out \nthe top five, each with at least 321,000 Latino eligible voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4 <strong>California\u2019s 40th District has the nation\u2019s highest share (80%) of Latinos among its eligible voter population.<\/strong>\n Texas is home to the next four highest districts, where at least \nseven-in-ten eligible voters in each are Latino: the 34th District \n(79%), 16th District (77%), 15th District (73%) and the 28th District \n(71%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 26 congressional districts, Latinos represent at least half of all\n eligible voters. Most are in California (11 districts) and Texas (eight\n districts). Florida (25th, 26th and 27th districts), Arizona (3rd and \n7th districts), New York (15th District) and Illinois (4th District) \nalso are home to congressional districts that meet this threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/01\/31\/where-latinos-have-the-most-eligible-voters-in-the-2020-election\/ft_2020-01-31_latinovoters_04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ft_2020.01.31_latinovoters_04.png\" alt=\"Only half of U.S. Latinos are eligible to vote\" class=\"wp-image-357402\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>5 <strong>Only about half of the nation\u2019s 60 million Hispanics are <em>eligible<\/em> to vote \u2013 the smallest share of any racial or ethnic group.<\/strong>\n While the Hispanic population has grown rapidly in recent decades, many\n are not eligible voters. More than other racial or ethnic groups, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/09\/13\/key-facts-about-young-latinos\/\">Hispanics are young<\/a> (18.6 million are under 18 years old) or non-citizen adults (11.3 million, more than half of whom are unauthorized immigrants).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The share of the Hispanic population that is eligible to vote varies \ngreatly by state. About 71% of Maine\u2019s Hispanic population is eligible \nto vote, as is 68% of Montana\u2019s, the highest shares in the country. \nAmong states with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/hispanic\/fact-sheet\/latinos-in-the-u-s-fact-sheet\/#top-three-states-by-share-of-us-hispanic-population-2017\">largest Hispanic populations<\/a>,\n about half or more of Hispanics are eligible to vote in Florida (56%), \nCalifornia (51%) and Texas (50%). The two states with the lowest shares \nof eligible voters among their Hispanic populations are North Carolina \n(34%) and Tennessee (33%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>How we did this<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For this project, we examined the geographic distribution of \nLatino eligible voters across states and congressional districts. The \nterm \u201celigible voters\u201d refer to persons ages 18 and older who are U.S. \ncitizens.
